Hello, I’m Denise Perry and I lead Survive in Dance.
Survive in Dance supports you to build a successful career in dance or moving outside of the sector. Our training and coaching helps you to find fulfilling work and pay the bills.
Focusing on building (non-dance) skills and finding opportunities, we are passionate about developing your survival skills or personal business toolkit to ensure you can manage the practicalities of what is often a portfolio career.
There is no such thing as luck in a dance career, you need to develop the 3 G’s:
GRIT to be resilient
GUTS to step out of your comfort zone
GAME PLAN (a clear vision of where you want to be)
As a careers coach and trainer I am passionate about growing people and companies to exceed their potential and access the (sometimes hidden) range of opportunities out there. Through my company Survive in Dance, I help arts professionals at all stages of their career find work that is both creatively fulfilling and pays the bills. Currently engaged as a Career Coach for Equity Charitable Trust, clients have included Sadlers Wells, Dance Professionals Fund, East London Dance, Ballet Boyz and various Universities. Over the years I have delivered bespoke training for a range of regional and national dance agencies, international partners, dancer-led networks and The Way to Work Course funded by Dance Professionals Fund, Dancers Career Development and Equity Charitable Trust.
Having advised over 400 artists and companies over the past 22 years, I share this expertise through training and public speaking, with examples including at conferences and on TV in seven countries; on UKTI ‘Exporting to Spain’ course; and representing Britain overseas as a Cultural Entrepreneur selected by the British Council to develop projects abroad. As a Relationship Manager for Arts Council I have worked directly with companies such as New Adventures Charity, Hofesh Shechter Company, Jasmin Vardimon Company, Russell Maliphant Company and Stopgap Dance Company amongst many others and have a clear overview of issues affecting the sector at both large and small scale.
As an Executive Producer/Director, I have had a blast touring work around the world from New York to Lapland, championing ethical working and fundraising over £1 million for dance. I’m the person trusted to hold everything together – as ‘at home’ pitching in front of stakeholders or supporting apprentices as being interviewed on Albanian breakfast TV.
An accredited Relational Dynamic Coach, licensed to deliver the prestigious Firework Career Change Coaching Programme, I am also a member of Association of Coaching.
